70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO user reviews

"Nice to have a lens at a reasonable price that works on my Nikon D40. I especially like the macro feature. At 1:2 it is more "macro" than a lot of other zooms. It is larger and heavier than my Nikon 55-200 but the macro and extra reach make it worthwhile. Decent image quality too."

"I think it has the best value for the money. I checked the equivalent lens by Nikon at a camera shop and found that there was little difference in the feel of the lens and its ability to sharply focus on a subject and the speed with which the autofocus works."

"I found it to be a good value and lightweight lens that was versatile enough for me to take surfing shots one day (on rocks near the break), then closeup shots the next. The autofocus worked really well, but needed to watch the settings on the camera."

"I've been 110% satisfied with this lense from Sigma. It focuses fast and typically focuses in the right spot on the first try. I needed something that would get me beyond my Nikon 200mmVR lense and this was an affordable way to do it and it does auto focus on the Nikon D40.

Some are saying this lense is HSM, it is not. I don't see this as an issue, however.
The macro feature works surprisingly well. I took this lense on vacation a couple days after I got it. Captured many excellent shots. The lense comes with a very nice case. Build quality is good. I did have the macro mode jam on me. It's important to review the instructions included with the lense."

"5 stars for price/performance. Obviously, this is not a pro grade lens, but instead of saving for a year+ to get the 300mm f/4 at $1200 this was a way to start shooting immediately. I shoot mostly wildlife, especially birds, and this lens has produced some great results (see examples on Flickr under JeffLoomis1). With good technique, images are crisp and bright. The macro feature was an unexpected bonus. I am surprised how much I use it for flowers, insects, butterflies, etc. Produces great bokeh affect. In low light this lens is a little slow due to the f/5.6 aperature, and can hunt a bit. But at this price point its hard to complain. Under most conditions, the performance meets or exceeds what you would expect at this level." "
